Life Cycle CourseThe Life Cycle Course is part of our agency's Mental Health & Mental Retardation Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) and falls under our Day Treatment Services. To learn more, please click the following link: Day Treatment Services.
Within the Life Cycle curriculum is information on sexual development and human sexuality throughout the life span. Each chapter of the course explores a different stage of the human life span. We will include many aspects of growing, including physical and social development, increased independence and responsibilities, and the choices that people make throughout their lives. Throughout this course, the issue of human sexuality will be viewed as one of the many aspects of what it means to be a person. Hopefully, participants will gain a new appreciation and a healthy respect for his/her own changing body. Segments of the course include a “home page” interview, which allows caregivers, family members, staff, and friends to participate in the curriculum. Participants have generally found these exercises to significantly enhance their learning experience! The Office of Mental Retardation states that “Agencies that deliver direct services to men, women and children with mental retardation, including residential, vocational, educational and other day services, have a responsibility to promote healthy sexual development, self-understanding, and a capacity for making personal choices.” --Mental Retardation Bulletin: Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, Dept. of Public Welfare. (December 1996). Number 00-96-23.
