Yough River Trail GardensThe Yough River Trail Gardens is one of the newest programs being developed by our agency. It is being funded through various grants, foundations and donations. It was developed over eight years of extensive planning. Groundbreaking was in the spring of 2004 with the installation of parking and restroom facilities.
The property is 3.5 acres of land fronting the Youghiogheny River, adjacent to the Youghiogheny River bicycle trail. The property is located 16 miles south of Monroeville outside of Boston, Pennsylvania. It borders the Buena Vista biking trail access point.
This beautiful, scenic site is being developed to offer a variety of outdoor growth activities. The various activities will be multi-faceted, self-sustaining, vocational and recreational. Many of our consumers visit the site weekly to participate in these activities. The site will also provide opportunities for commercial enterprise and public participation.
The site is currently equipped with handicapped-accessible bathrooms, convenient parking and a 52 foot by 24 foot pavilion equipped with electricity and water and features raised flowerbeds and Therapeutic Gardens maintained by our clients and staff. These gardens are fully accessible and provide horticulture therapy to agency consumers as well as a healing landscape to all visitors.
In April of 2006, Milestone broke ground on a hydroponic greenhouse that currently produces a variety of specialty lettuces and greens. The produce is marketed to various high-end restaurants and specialty grocers and employs people with disabilities.
Future plans for the project include concessions, walking paths, fishing and camping opportunities. This program will continue to grow throughout the years to become a beautiful natural resource for our consumers and the community. Click here to return to our Programs & Services Main Page |
