Pittsburgh Creativity Project website profiles Everyone an Artist Gallery! Click for more details! The Everyone an Artist program began in November 2001 with the mission of creating an environment where adults with developmental disabilities and/or mental illness could engage in the process of creating art and participating in the local art community. The program currently includes both the Milestone Art Studio and the Everyone an Artist Gallery, and is rooted in the principle that people use art to communicate and contribute to society.
Inspired by the visual art centers developed by the National Institute of Arts and Disabilities, Milestone Art Studio serves individuals who attend Milestone’s Lawrenceville Support Center and offers both habilitative and vocational art programs. The Studio program focuses on developing art and vocational skills through individualized instruction, tools and accommodations. By providing an art studio fully accessible to people with disabilities, Milestone seeks to promote independence and personal development while producing work of high artistic merit. Artists with disabilities are able to display and sell their artwork and craft products at the Everyone an Artist gallery and boutique on Butler Street in Lawrenceville. The gallery is part of the 16:62 Design Zone, recently described in the New York Times travel section as “a hub for arts, fashion and interior design”. The Milestone Art Studio also offers two open studio sessions a month, where community members can participate in art tutorials and use materials for a nominal fee. The Milestone Art Studio and Everyone an Artist Gallery are guided by a Curatorial Advisory Council of artists, arts professionals and disability advocates.
